History of El Primero
The hotel was originally built by John and Lily Ratcliffe in 1930 and indulge guests with upscale amenities and art deco interiors. Once known as the classiest stay in San Diego, the building fell into disrepair over the years and became a gaudy painted flop house. In 2004, Pie bought the property and returned her to gloriously classy and art deco roots but added modern features and environmental touches sure to please.

Awards Take Notice of El Primero
The dignified historic charmer has garnered several awards because of the hard work and obvious love of the hotel by its owners. It is now Chula Vista's historic resource #73 and received the Mayor's Neighborhood Beautification Award in 2005. All Pie's hard work has paid off and rewards were seen in a Businessman of the Year award and the Historic Preservationist of the year award. It was has receive both state and congressional recognition and been nominated for both the Save Our Heritage Organization award and the Orchids Award by San Diego Architectural Society.

One could easily spend the day in the hotel's comfortable courtyard or within one of the relaxing bedrooms, but there is a life to the hotel that comes from the family who runs it. Pie and his clan greet each guest like an old friend. There's a familial feel to the property that allows guest to instantly feel at ease, as if they've entered a home-away-from-home.
